"Don't wait for perfect." A long talk with Yaroslav FedrychLife about his path into detailing

On the Foam Heroes TV channel we talk a lot about chemicals, techniques and proper car care. But behind every piece of pro advice there's a person and their story.

Our guest this time is Yaroslav Fedorovich, one of the best-known Russian detailing bloggers.

Together with Misha we talked about first cars, failed experiments, starting his own channel, and why good detailing starts not with expensive products but with the will to understand the process.

"It all started with my brother's car"

Yaroslav's path into detailing started long before he had a car of his own. His inspiration was his older brother Denis and his well-kept Lexus RX.

Misha: A lot of people know you as the guy who's been talking about detailing for years. Do you remember how it all started?

Yaroslav: Of course. It all started with my brother Denis. He had a Lexus RX, and I watched him take care of that car all the time. That's when I first realized a car can look completely different if you pay attention to it.

Misha: So the love for car care came first, and the car came later?

Yaroslav: Exactly. I just wanted my car to look just as good someday.

When there was almost no information out there

Misha: Where did you start? Were you already using pro chemicals?

Yaroslav: No. I bought everything at regular auto parts stores. I started with the interior, tried different cleaners and mostly went by instinct.

Misha: So you literally learned from your own mistakes?

Yaroslav: Absolutely.

The first polishing job you can never forget

Every detailer has a story they can laugh about years later. For Yaroslav, it's his first polishing job.

Misha: Which mistake stuck with you the most?

Yaroslav: The first polish. I wanted to make it better and ended up with a damaged door. Then I drove to Moscow in my famous pom-pom beanie. It stung back then; now it's funny.

Misha: So mistakes are unavoidable?

Yaroslav: Of course. The only question is whether you learn from them.

Meeting professional detailing

Misha: When did it start to feel like detailing was more than a hobby?

Yaroslav: When I first saw professional products and people who explained the techniques. That's when I understood the result doesn't come from luck, it comes from the right approach.

Misha: So the chemicals are just a tool?

Yaroslav: Exactly. What matters is understanding the process.

Why YouTube happened

Before video there were articles and posts on Drive2. That's where the first audience came together.

Misha: Why did you decide to move to YouTube?

Yaroslav: Video lets you show so much more. You can explain the technique, show the mistakes, compare the result. For me that always mattered more than a pretty picture.

Misha: Did you ever want to look like a flawless expert?

Yaroslav: Just the opposite. I always wanted to stay a person who's still learning too.

What detailing really is

The most important part of the talk wasn't about products at all.

Misha: A lot of people today see detailing as endlessly buying new products. Do you agree?

Yaroslav: No. Detailing is a skill. Don't expect a perfect result on the first try. First learn to wash a car properly, understand the materials, and only then move on to harder processes.

Misha: So you shouldn't buy the most expensive stuff right away?

Yaroslav: Exactly. Start with the basics.

Yaroslav's main point: a good result comes not from the most expensive chemicals, but from understanding the technique.

Advice for beginners

At the end of the conversation, Misha asked Yaroslav for a few tips for newcomers.

Misha: Say someone just bought their first car care chemicals. What would you tell them?

Yaroslav: Take your time. Use gentle products, don't be afraid to experiment, and don't reach for the heavy artillery right away. It all comes with time.

Misha: And the most important thing?

Yaroslav: Enjoy the process. Without that, detailing won't work out.
