Paint Decontamination

Decontamination is deep cleaning of the contamination a regular car wash can't remove. The job is to take off embedded iron particles, tar, sap, mineral deposits and other chemically bonded contaminants, and leave the paintwork truly clean.

A two-step wash removes road grime, but not everything sitting on the paintwork. After a touchless and contact wash, the paint can still hold tar spots, tree sap, iron particles, bug remains and road film. These contaminants are chemically bonded to the surface and need their own cleaning step.

Paint decontamination brings the surface back to a clean state and preps the car for protection, paint correction or further care.

First figure out where the contamination came from, then pick your cleaner.

Why soaps don't wash off tar and iron

Car wash soap is made to remove sand, dust and road film. Tar, iron particles and resin bond to the clear coat differently and need specialized solvents or chemical reactions.

That's why paint decontamination is its own step in the process, not just a stronger wash.

Diagnosis — which cleaner do you need?

Black specks on the lower panels? That would be

tar, asphalt and road resins. Reach for Tar Spirit.

Orange specks and iron fallout mean brake dust and metal residue have built up — the answer is T1000.

Sticker residue and sticky spots are most likely tree sap or adhesive — stock up on Orange Spirit.

The cleaning sequence
1. Do a touchless wash, then a contact wash. 2. Identify the type of contamination. 3. Use the specialized cleaner for that job. 4. Rinse the product off thoroughly with water. 5. Check that the surface is fully clean.
Before you apply protection
If your goal is to prep the surface for wax, paint sealant or a ceramic coating, run the full decontamination process. Juicy Citrus removes bugs and organic soils. Tar Spirit dissolves tar and road resins. T1000 removes iron fallout. Finish by degreasing the surface with Easy Prep — a must before you apply protection. Important! This is a prep step, not a decontamination product. It removes leftover oils and helps the protective product bond to the paintwork.
What can go wrong
Don't rub tar with a microfiber towel, don't use one cleaner for every type of contamination, and don't work on hot paint. Don't skip the pre-wash either, and don't apply protective products without checking the condition of the surface.
